Zine El Abidine Ben Ali

Early Life & Career

• Born on 3 September 1936 in Hammam Sousse, French Tunisia.

• Rose through military and intelligence ranks; became Prime Minister in 1987 and assumed the presidency via a bloodless coup the same year  .

Presidency & Overthrow

• Ruled Tunisia from 1987 to 2011, winning elections with overwhelmingly large margins yet under an authoritarian regime marked by repression and corruption  .

• His ousting in January 2011 sparked the Jasmine Revolution, initiating the wider Arab Spring movement  .

Death & Burial

• Diagnosed with prostate cancer; died on 19 September 2019 in a hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia at age 83  .

• Buried in Al‑Baqi CemeteryMedina, near the Prophet’s Mosque on 21 September 2019, amid subdued and private ceremonies  .

Aminu Alhassan Dantata

• Passed away at age 94 on 28 June 2025 in Abu Dhabi, UAE ().

Burial

• His final wish was to be buried beside his late wife, Rabi’a, in Medina, Saudi Arabia.

• Saudi authorities approved the request, and his body was flown to Medina. The funeral was held on 30 June 2025, with prayers in absentia performed in Kano, Nigeria.
